What I Learned From Julia Child – Real Estate is Like a Great Recipe

I remember the days when we only had a handful of television stations. Cable TV was called “pay TV” and was a terrible idea to be stopped before it starts! It was a disaster if a good western show or variety show wasn’t on. No one told us how to fix up our homes, put down a patio or build a dog house. There were no interventions, you could have an ugly home if you wanted to and no one would knock on your door with a rehab crew and a camera crew. Real Estate was sold by looking at large books to find a particular home.

I’m showing my age.

We had a few ‘educational’ shows now and then. One of them was a cooking show hosted by Julia Child. I loved her. I watched every show, cooked a lot of her meals, and put on 10 pounds. Back in the day, everybody had a Julia Child impersonation. They were always funny! I was saddened when she passed away. She was an icon and a trailblazer. She was the benchmark used to measure TV Cooks for many a year. But Julia wasn’t just a cook. She was a great Philosopher.

So on the celebration of Julia’s 100th birthday, I’ve been thinking of the episodes I still remember so vividly and her favorite sayings. I realized that there are so many that apply to everything we do in life, not just what we happen to be making in the kitchen. To all my friends in real estate and those friends I haven’t met yet, I’ll send these famous quotes out to you. They work as well in the agency as in the kitchen.

Nothing is too much trouble if it turns out right.

Keep trying (this is from her episode where she teaches us to flip potato pancakes).

Do it right.

Use real ingredients.

Be yourself.

The only stumbling block is the fear of failure.

And here is my favorite: If you’re in a good profession, it’s hard to get bored, because you’re never finished. There will always be work you haven’t done.

I’ll lift a glass of good red wine to Julia and thank her for many, many years of inspiration both in and out of the kitchen. As I pour that glass I’ll remember another favorite saying of hers:

I love a good red wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food I’m cooking.

Happy Birthday Julia!
